Over £8 billion is wasted every year by Brits who fail to haggle down prices or shop around, according to recent research by website

However, there are ways to get want you want for less. Here are our top five tips:

1. Haggle the price down

Almost every price you see can be haggled down if you just ask. If there's no marked price always offer low and be prepared to argue for a cheaper deal. Most prices at market stalls, taxis and restaurants are not set in stone so don't be afraid to suggest a cheaper price.

2. Shop around

Use comparison sites to find cheaper deals and ask your friends for recommendations. Wise up on any big purchases you make and find out what the current market price is so you know exactly what you're talking about when you buy and won't be sold unnecessary things on top of the purchase.

3. Time your shopping

When going on holiday, or buying tickets to the theatre or a music concert, if there's still tickets available at the last minute they will probably be cheaper as the company will want to sell as many as possible. Last minute holiday packages are usually a lot cheaper and if you travel to an airport and ask for a standby flight you'll also save money.

4. Loyalty doesn't pay

Staying with one company generally won't give you a better price on financial products – in fact, you might end up paying more if you remain loyal. So have a look around for a better deal. If you're thinking about switching, speak to your provider and ask it if it can offer anything better. If not, switching is a quick and easy process but remember to check how long introductory offers last for.

5. Go online

Many things are cheaper online and you can sign up for alerts and newsletters from voucher sites for weekly deals. The website flags up any product you look at online and gives you examples of cheaper versions. It is a time and money saver and works in real time so the prices given are always up-to-date.
