Aldi's cast iron cookware range

Avid chefs can get their hands on handsome cast-iron cookware from Aldi, hundreds of pounds cheaper than the Le Creuset classics.

What’s the deal exactly?

Aldi has launched a range of cast-iron cookware to rival famed French cooking utensil maker Le Creuset.

Le Creuset dishes can cost anywhere between £95 and £425. By contrast the new Aldi range starts at £12.99 rising to £24.99 for the deep and shallow casserole dishes. Here’s a full list of the products on offer from the supermarket:

Description Price

Cast iron shallow casserole dish £24.99
Cast iron roaster £19.99
Large cast iron tagine £19.99
Cast iron frying pan £14.99
Cast iron skillet £14.99
Cast iron grill tray £12.99
Silicone double oven glove £6.99
Stoneware mixed assortment £3.49

Cooking fans will be able to pre-order the dishes online from 16 September and will be in store and online for sale on 20 September.

Why should I care?

Bargain supermarkets such as Aldi have taken the challenge of providing affordable consumer products that don’t compromise on quality to new heights in recent years.

For instance, Aldi had a winner in this year’s Moneywise Easter egg taste test, with a real premium look and feel to the product.

This premium look cast-iron cookware is just the latest in a long line of eye-catching offerings from the supermarket. Aldi says its range is suitable for use with all heat sources, including gas, electric, induction hobs and even solid fuel cookers - they can also be placed in the oven up to 200 degrees Celsius.

What’s the catch?

Aldi say there’s a limited supply, “be quick as once they’re gone, they’re gone,” which would seem to suggest this is a one-time-only range on offer.

There’s no accounting for the quality of these Aldi dishes (Moneywise hasn’t been given a tester) until you buy one and see how it fares under rigorous use.

Le Creuset dishes however come under the banner of “reassuringly expensive” as they are designed to last a lifetime.

What are my other options?

Aldi aren’t the only retailer offering cheaper-priced cast-iron dishes. A quick search on Amazon shows the online retail giant also has dishes costing as low as £29.99. These comes with the benefit of multiple online reviews to give buyer an idea of quality.

Alternatively, you could invest in a proper Le Creuset range. While it is a lot more to pay up front, the cookware lasts for years with fans saying they offer great value over the long term.

Where can I find out more?

Check the Aldi website from 16 September when you can begin to pre-order items. Alternatively pop down to your nearest supermarket to see if its in stock.

I purchased 2 large deep

I purchased 2 large deep casseroles from Aldi almost 10 years ago at £14.99 each, I bought 2 as I did not think they would last, I've only used 1 and it is still like new after all those years of constant use on hob and in oven.I could not manage without it, once it gets hot just needs low heat and cooks very even. i would never pay for the fancy name as I have seen how they can wear so not worth the high cost when I can buy as good for so little. Only down side is the weight but I knew that as I have used a cast iron frying pan for 40 years and the best type.
