Deal of the week: Get 25% extra Clubcard points with Tesco Pay+

11 May 2018

Use Tesco’s dedicated payment app and you’ll get an extra Clubcard point for every £4 you spend.

What’s the deal exactly?

Tesco’s very own payment app Tesco Pay+ has now had more than half a million downloads. As a result, Tesco is offering an extra Clubcard point for every £4 spent in all Tesco stores in the UK, including petrol stations.

This means that you’ll effectively be getting a 25% bonus on top of the usual amount of one point per pound spent in store.

Download the app on to either Android or iOS phones or devices and add your payment cards that you want to use. Then spend using the contactless technology on the phone to gain the bonus.

Why should I care?

Tesco Clubcard points are a valuable way to obtain discount vouchers, deals and promotions through their rewards tokens. You’ll earn Clubcard points 25% faster by doing so through its dedicated payment app.

The payment app is a convenient way for customers to track their in-store spending too.

What’s the catch?

Moneywise reported in January that Tesco was cutting the value of rewards tokens you’ll earn. While initially it did this without notice, after a customer backlash, it agreed to postpone the changes until 10 June this year. This means that, instead of Tesco Clubcard points being worth four times their value in rewards from partner firms such as Pizza Express and Zizzi, the scheme will be changed to three times their value.

What is more, any money has to be spent in store.  This 25% bonus will last until 31 December 2018.

What are the other options?

Loyalty point schemes have become increasingly less generous, but you could consider Sainsbury’s Nectar points. You can earn one point per £1 spent in Sainsbury’s, effectively 0.5% cashback. 500 Nectar points are worth £2.50. Customers can also get tailored offers on the Nectar portal, which can include bonus points on their spend - though this will vary from customer to customer.

Also, equivalent cashback card offers are still out there. Check our guide to the best credit cards for rewards and cashback to see what is available.
