Deal of the week: Get your will written for free this January

Get your will written for free this January thanks to the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.

What’s the deal exactly?

Throughout the month of January, Macmillan Cancer Support is offering people a free will writing session to help ensure your wealth and assets are protected after death.

The service is completely free of charge and depending on where you live in the UK can be completed online, face to face at home, in branch with a solicitor, through the post or over the phone.

Whatever you choose, you will receive a will that reflects your wishes after your death.

You must register your interest in January to take advantage of the offer, but you can schedule your will writing session at any point until 31 May 2018.

Why should I care?

Research by Macmillan shows that nearly two thirds (63%) of people in the UK do not have a will prepared. This includes 42% of people aged 55 and over.

Many wills are also out of date, with around one in five wills still including a former partner or failing to include recently-born children and grandchildren.

What’s the catch?

This service is completely free, but only covers standard wills.

While there is no requirement to leave any money to Macmillan, many people choose to do so. Gifts left in wills make up about a third of the charity’s yearly income. Visit the Macmillan website to see how the charity spends the funds it receives each year.

What other options do I have?

You don’t need to use a professional service to write a will, you can do it yourself. But it is crucial to use the correct terminology to make sure your will is legally acceptable.

More information on writing wills is available on the Gov.uk website.
