A quarter (25%) of Moneywise.co.uk users who are over 50 and unemployed are worried about finding work, according to the results of our recent poll.
Only 1% of unemployed over 50s are confident about finding work in future.
In contrast, just 2% of unemployed under 50s Moneywise polled are worried about finding a job.
But it’s not just those out of work who have concerns, two in 10 (20%) employed over 50s are worried about keeping their jobs in their 50s and beyond, while 6% of employed under 50s are concerned about losing their jobs.
The findings follow a recent study from the Centre for Ageing Better, which found that people in their 50s are more likely than any other age group to be unemployed and find it harder to get a new job than younger workers.
But there are initiatives designed to help older workers – the government, for example, has tasked not-for-profit organisation Business in the Community with supporting businesses to retain, retrain, and recruit older workers.
Moneywise has also spoken to five workers in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s who are proof that you can still find a job in later life.
