New ‘ethical’ loyalty scheme launched for Mastercard users

A new ethical loyalty scheme has been launched for Mastercard customers, which is available regardless of which provider they bank with.

The Ice loyalty scheme allows Mastercard holders to earn points as they spend with participating retailers – all of which it deems ethical companies. This is in addition to any cashback or loyalty points earned from the customer’s card provider.

However, the range of retailers signed up to the scheme is limited.

Family restaurants Harvester and Toby Carvery are both participating, as are the All Bar One, O’Neill’s and Sizzling Pubs chains. Travel agency TUI – which also operates the First Choice brand – is included, although only if you use its online website rather than its high street shops.

However, there are no major supermarkets or high street shops where you can earn points at present.

A full list of participating retailers, and how they meet Ice’s ethical standards, is available on the loyalty scheme’s website. A retailer can be deemed ethical if it sources its food or products in a responsible way, or it commits to reducing waste and pollution.

While the amount of points you earn varies between participating retailers, customers typically earn one or two Ice points for each pound spent.

These points can then be exchanged on the Ice website for vouchers to spend in retailers including high street names John Lewis and Marks and Spencer. A point is worth 1p or 2p, depending on which retailer you claim the voucher for.

To sign up, users must register their card on the Ice website. For online purchases you must buy using a tracked link on the Ice website, while to collect points in person you can make your purchases as normal. Your online account will be updated as users spend and earn points.

Jude Thorne, founder of Ice, says: “We want to position Ice as a breath of fresh-air in a crowded and confusing market.

“We’ve made it simple for our users to sign-up their Mastercard credit card and earn and spend points wherever and whenever they like.”
