Moneywise readers would give up work for £1m

17 November 2017

The magic figure users would need to come into to give up work is £1 million, according to the results of our latest poll.

Of the 1,359 people who voted, more than one in five (22%) said £1 million is the amount they’d require to give up work.

This was followed by one in five (20%) who said they’d need just half this amount, at £500,000, and 16% who said they’d need £250,000.

A lucky few at 7% and 6% said they’d need just £100,000 and £50,000 respectively to jack in their jobs.

Our poll didn’t ask people to enter their ages, so these relatively small sums may indicate that some readers are nearing the end of their working lives and that they’ve already paid off their mortgages and accrued some savings.

However, at the other end of the scale, more than one in five (22%) said they’d need more than £1 million to give up work, broken down between 12% who’d need £2 million, and 10% who’d need £5 million or more.

An additional 3% selected the ‘Other’ option, while 4% said they’d never give up work regardless of how much money they came into.
