Deal of the week: Two months free health insurance with Bupa

Take out a health insurance policy with Bupa and receive the equivalent of two months of your policy for free.

What’s the deal exactly?

Bupa is offering two months of free health insurance to new customers who take out a policy before 30 November 2017.

The amount you save will depend on your own circumstances and the level of cover you take out, but two months free is equivalent to a 16% discount.

Bupa says a comprehensive policy for a single 50-year old, with full cancer cover and a £250 excess, would cost £1,065 for the first year. This represents a discount of £170.40 on the standard price.

For a 30-year old a similar comprehensive policy would cost £602.40 over the first year, after a discount worth £96.38 has been applied.

Why should I care?

Health insurance policies are designed to cover the costs of medical expenses, from the diagnosis stage to treatment. All polices also come with additional rewards such as discounted eye tests, glasses and gym memberships.

The offer can also be used in conjunction with Bupa’s current 10% family discount and 5% couple’s discount, as long as all polices are purchased at the same time.

What’s the catch?

This offer runs until 30 November 2017 and the discount will be applied in months 11 and 12 of the first year of the policy.

The discount applies both to policies taken out directly with Bupa and those using a third party or intermediary, but you must be a new Bupa insurance customer to receive the discount.

What other options do I have?

Even with the two months free insurance it may still be cheaper to go elsewhere.

For example, a 50-year-old taking out a comprehensive policy, with full cancer cover and a £250 excess, would pay £1,060 with Vitality. This is marginally cheaper than Bupa’s annual cost of £1,065, although the associated benefits are not the same for both policies and you may get better value out of Bupa’s plan.
