Scam watch: Robert Downey Jr issues fraud warning to fans

28 August 2017

Actor Robert Downey Jr has issued a warning after scam artists posed as him online and attempted to fraudulently take money from his fans.

The Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes star says online scammers have tried to impersonate him and have been asking for donations to charitable causes which do not exist.

Fraudsters have posed as Mr Downey Jr on social media and chat platforms, forcing the actor to issue a public statement warning his fans.

He says that all official charity fundraising is detailed on his verified social media accounts and that he would never contact fans seeking individual donations.

Mr Downey Jr posted on Facebook: “It has come to my attention that one or more scam artists have taken to impersonating me online and asking some of you via private message or chat for ‘donations’ for various ‘causes’.”

He added: “I will never ever communicate via private chat platforms, and I would never ask individual fans for money for any reason. Any communication from me will originate from my public, verified social media pages, and all fundraising is done via broad, public campaigns.”

More than 1,700 fans responded to the post, with many outlining how they had been targeted by scammers pretending to be the actor.
