Travel for half price with the Virgin Trains East Coast flash sale, with 500,000 reduced price tickets on offer.

What’s the deal exactly?

Virgin Trains East Coast is running a 50% off seat sale for travel between 11 September and 20 December 2017.

This is a flash sale, so you must book before 23:59 on Monday 28 August 2017.

There are 500,000 seats in this offer with 420,000 standard and 80,000 first class seats included.

This sale applies to the east coast route only, not the west coast line. Destinations served by Virgin Trains East Coast include Edinburgh, Leeds, London, Newcastle and York.

Why should I care?

Train travel in the UK is very expensive, so any opportunity to cut the cost of your fare should be snapped up. Analysis by the RMT union shows rail fares have risen almost twice as fast as wages since 2010.

In this sale, Moneywise found standard class single journey tickets from London Kings Cross to Leeds available from £11 and Newcastle to Edinburgh tickets from £5.20.

What’s the catch?

The discounted tickets are for travel between 11 September and 20 December 2017, although weekends are only available up to 5 November. You can’t travel between 21 and 29 October 2017 (inclusive). Plus, there are fewer discounted fares available for journeys at peak times.

You must buy your ticket before 23.59 on 28 August 2017 and book through the Virgin Trains East Coast site or the desktop version of thetrainline.com, although booking fees apply to the latter.

Tickets are subject to availability so book early and be aware that no other offers or discounts can be applied at the same time, including the use of railcards and vouchers.

What other options do I have?

If you’re looking to travel by train but don’t want to travel between two stations on the east coast route, read Moneywise’s guide to cutting the cost of train fares.

Where can I find out more?

You can book online and read the full terms and conditions on the Virgin Trains East Coast website.
