Nearly a million still to renew tax credits a week before the deadline

24 July 2017

People in receipt of tax credits are being reminded that they have a week left to renew their credits before this year’s deadline of 31 July.

HMRC warns that 960,000 people have yet to renew their tax credits and are in danger of losing out on valuable benefits.

When renewing, it’s also important to tell HMRC any changed to working hours, income, childcare costs, or a new address. Last year, HMRC reports that 410,000 people had their payments stopped due to missing the renewal deadline to inform it of changes to circumstances.

Rachel McLean, HMRC’s interim director general of customer services says: “I urge customers who have yet to renew their tax credits to do so as soon as possible, thereby avoiding having their payments stopped. The 31 July deadline is fast approaching.”

What are tax credits?

Tax credits are a benefit provided by the government to disabled workers, low income workers, or anyone responsible for children. They come in two forms: child tax credit and working tax credit.

You may be eligible for child tax credit if you are responsible for a child under the age of 16 or a child under the age of 20 who is in eligible education or training. You needn’t be in employment to claim child tax credit.

Working tax credit is available to anyone working a certain number of hours per week aged 16 to 24 with a child, or a qualifying disability, or anyone 25 or over on an income below a certain level. You cannot claim for working tax credit and universal credit simultaneously.
