TalkTalk to hike broadband, phone and mobile prices this summer

TalkTalk is hiking prices on some of its call rates as well as several of its legacy broadband and mobile packages later this summer, the provider has announced.

From 1 August, broadband packages and call prices will rise by between 4% and 40%, depending on the service.

In addition, mobile package prices will rise by between 10% and 27%, also from 1 August.

The move follows price hike announcements this year by other major telecoms companies, BT, Plusnet and Sky. 

It also follows TalkTalk's guarantee ealier this year not to raise prices on a new range of long-term broadband contracts.

Can I cancel my contract as a result?

Affected customers can cancel their contract penalty free as a result of the price hikes. You just need to call TalkTalk’s customer services department within 30 days of receiving notification of the price hikes.

The move doesn’t affect TalkTalk’s one million customers on its 12, 18 or 24 month ‘Fixed Low Price Plans’. 

TalkTalk says the “majority” of legacy customers affected by the price hikes can benefit from moving to one of its cheaper fixed plans.  

Of course, unhappy customers who want to stay with TalkTalk should also try and haggle for a discount as a result of the price hikes.

Why is TalkTalk hiking prices?

On why it’s raising prices, a spokesperson for TalkTalk says: “Changing our packages and pricing is never a decision we take lightly but we’re committed to bringing our customers the best value products and services.

“We’ve been investing millions in improving our unlimited broadband network, making our TV service faster and simpler to use, and introducing industry-leading security services and calling features which we provide as standard.

“Whilst making such improvements mean that some prices will increase, we’re determined to put our customers first.”

Are other broadband providers hiking prices?

So far this year, the following major telecoms companies have announced price hikes:

  • BT – hiked broadband, home phone, BT Sport and certain call costs from 2 April
  • Plusnet – increased home phone prices from 29 June
  • Sky - upped broadband, TV and call prices from 1 March

I wish we had an internet service to cancel!We pay for 'Business' Broadband Internet access but have not had access to the internet for nearly a week due to TalkTalk complete lack of Customer Care. Apparently it's not their fault but a third parties so why should they care!
