EE to launch free mobile roaming in Europe on same day as EU ban

5 May 2017

EE is introducing free mobile roaming for existing pay monthly and pay-as-you-go mobile, mobile broadband and tablet customers in 47 European countries from 15 June.

Customers don’t need to do anything or pay extra to get the benefit, and will receive an SMS to let them know of the changes to their plan.

The move comes into force on the same day as an EU ban on mobile roaming charges, which means you’ll be able to use your phone without incurring roaming charges in all 28 EU countries, with Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway following “shortly after”.

The 16 additional European countries covered by EE’s free mobile roaming include Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Monaco, and Switzerland.

In addition, the mobile provider has announced the launch of a range of new tariffs that will enable customers to use their UK calls, text and data allowance across 52 destinations worldwide in countries such as Australia, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and the USA.

However, to benefit you’ll need to take out or upgrade to EE’s new ‘4GEE Max’ plans, which are available for pay monthly customers from 10 May.

The tariffs will also be available to Sim-only customers from a yet to be announced date in May, while mobile broadband and tablet tariffs will be introduced for new and upgrading users from 1 June.

An example of the new roaming tariff includes the latest Samsung Galaxy S8 handset for a one-off £9.99 plus £62.99 per month for a 24-month contract, which offers unlimited calls, unlimited texts and 25GB of data.

Moneywise verdict

The free roaming from 15 June will be welcome news for EE customers planning to travel to Europe. However, before you consider taking out or upgrading to EE’s new 4GEE Max tariffs, use a mobile comparison website, such as, to find the best value tariff for you – you may get cheaper deals elsewhere.

Also bear in mind that EE isn’t the only provider to offer inclusive roaming tariffs. Only last month Vodafone introduced new tariffs that enable free roaming in 40 overseas destinations.

Three Mobile meanwhile, operates a scheme called ‘Feel at Home’ where, depending on your mobile tariff, you can roam for free in 42 destinations worldwide. Carphone Warehouse’s iD network also lets those on its ‘TakeAway’ plan roam for free in 29 countries.
