Mothers day card

Supermarkets Asda and Tesco are offering 20% off certain gift cards this week in the run up to Mother’s Day on 26 March.

What’s the deal exactly?

Until 26 March, shoppers can get 20% off the following gift cards in store at Asda:

  • New Look £25 gift card – which means it’ll cost you £20
  • Now TV Entertainment £15 gift card – which means it’ll cost you £12
  • Now TV Movies £15 gift card – which means it’ll cost you £12
  • Now TV Sports £10 gift card – which means it’ll cost you £8
  • Pizza Express £20 gift card – which means it’ll cost you £16
  • Zizzi £20 gift card – which means it’ll cost you £16

Tesco shoppers meanwhile can get the following gift cards in store and online at Tesco until 26 March:

  • Ask Italian £20 gift card – which means it’ll cost you £16
  • GAP £25 gift card – which means it’ll cost you £20
  • Google Play £25 gift card – which means it’ll cost you £20
  • Pizza Express £20 gift card – which means it’ll cost you £16
  • Monsoon £25 gift card – which means it’ll cost you £20
  • New Look £25 gift card – which means it’ll cost you £20

Why should I care?

If you were planning to buy a gift card for your Mum or for someone else anyway then it makes sense to snap up one using these deals.

In addition, if you were planning to buy something at one of these retailers anyway, or you were planning to have a meal at one of the restaurants included, buying one of these vouchers and using it to pay means you’ll get 20% more for your money.

What’s the catch?

Both offers are subject to availability and Asda’s offer is in store only. If you’ve got to go out of your way to get to an Asda or Tesco store the saving might not be worth the petrol or public transport expenditure, so check first.

However, if you do buy gift cards online at Tesco be aware that you’ll be charged for delivery unless you select a digital gift card option where there’s no delivery fee.

You should also be aware of the many pitfalls of gift cards before buying. Namely that most gift cards have expiration dates, if you lose the card you usually won’t get your money back, you don’t get the consumer rights protection you’d get if you paid using credit or debit card, the card could be worthless if the store goes bust, and you may be restricted to using the card online or in store only.

See our Seven reasons not to buy a gift card for more on this.

If you decide you’re happy to take these risks, try to use the card as quickly as possible.

What other options do I have?

Online gift card market place Zeek sells unwanted gift cards at discounted prices, although when Moneywise checked we could only see discounts of up to 10% on offer. A pop-up window did, however, state that savings of up to 25% could be made by joining the website. So it’s worth paying Zeek a visit first to compare savings.

Where can I find out more?

Asda doesn’t have any information on the deal online, but Tesco information can be found on its online gift card store.
