Deal of the week: Grab cheap rail tickets in Virgin Trains' flash sale

10 March 2017

Rail users can travel on Virgin Trains’ west coast route for less if you buy tickets in its flash sale this weekend.

What’s the deal exactly?

Virgin Trains is having a sale to celebrate 20 years running the west coast main line. This route runs to and from London Euston to destinations including Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, and Manchester.

Both standard and first class tickets are reduced, for travel between 25 March and 24 August 2017.

But go quick as the sale runs until Tuesday 14 March 2017.

Prices start from:

  • London to Birmingham – tickets from £4. In comparison an anytime ticket between London and Birmingham costs £88.
  • London to Glasgow – tickets from £14. In comparison, turning up on the day to travel between London to Glasgow will set you back £182.50.
  • London to Manchester – tickets from £10. In comparison a London to Manchester anytime single costs £169.

Why should I care?

As those anytime fares listed above suggest, train travel in the UK is very expensive, so any opportunity to save money should be jumped upon. You can buy tickets for travel until August so this sale is perfect for planning summer trips to see family and friends.

What’s the catch?

If you’re expecting £4 tickets between London and Birmingham at peak times on weekdays you’re going to be disappointed. The cheapest sale tickets are for quieter services when trains are less busy.

This sale also only applies to Virgin’s west coast route, so if you’re looking to travel between stations on its east coast line, such as Edinburgh, Leeds, Newcastle and York, then you’ll be disappointed as these are not included in the sale.

You also can’t use other discounts, including railcards, on ticket purchases. So check if you could get fares cheaper using your railcard first.

What other options do I have?

Sale or no sale, booking as far in advance as you can is the best way to get cheap train travel. You can usually book up to 12 weeks in advance so plan ahead to get the best value.

Where can I find out more?
