Deal of the week: give to charity for free as you shop

Give money to charity for free when you make purchases and switch providers online using Give as you Live.

What’s the deal exactly?

Websites such as Quidco and TopCashback have proved a popular way for shoppers to earn cashback as they spend online.

Give as you Live operates in a similar way but instead gives the cash earned to charity instead. If you’re planning to make a purchase at one of the eligible retailers, simply click through the link on the Give as you Live website and a percentage of each shopping purchase will be donated to charity.

Major retailers, such as Argos, Asos and John Lewis, are included in the scheme while the charities signed up include Cancer Research UK and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

The site also includes a price comparison function, which gives a donation to charity when users switch their insurance or energy provider.

Why should I care?

Give as you Live has helped raise over £7.9 million for UK charities since its launch in 2010. More than 220,000 charities are registered on the site and 4,100 online retailers are included. Charities pay nothing for being involved with the site.

What’s the catch?

If you’re making an online purchase anyway then it takes little effort to register your email address and click through the link.

Give as you Live keeps a share of the cash earned for itself, but it promises to give at least 50% of the proceeds to good causes.

If you’re using its price comparison service, make sure you check more than one site to ensure you get the best deal possible, as Give as you Live doesn’t cover every brand on the market. Cross referencing the results from two or three sites ensures you’re getting the best deal available.

What other options do I have?

You can always use other charity cashback sites, such as Easy Fundraising, to raise money for good causes. Major cashback sites like Quidco and TopCashback also allow you to donate your earnings directly to charity. You can also use these sites to earn cashback and then give the cash – or a percentage of it - to charity yourself, although this involves much more effort.

Where can I find out more?
