Sky to hike broadband, TV and call prices: details revealed

Sky customers will be hit with a range of inflation busting price hikes from 1 March.

Moneywise warned Sky customers that price rises were likely after an advert was spotted stating that price changes were due on 1 March.

Sky wouldn’t confirm this at the time, but it has since announced the following price changes - although it wouldn't tell us how many customers are affected:

  • Line rental rising from £17.40 a month to £18.99 a month – a £1.59 – or 9% - monthly increase. (Although prices will remain at £17.40 a month for those who only take line rental and no other products from Sky.)
  • Some TV customers who are either on legacy products, or who had previously been benefitting from a lower price, will see their bills brought into line with current pricing. Sky says this will see an average increase of less than £3 a month. For example, some customers with the Unlimited Bundle pay £20 a month, but this will rise to £22 a month – a £2 a month – or 10% increase. 
  • Some broadband customers who are either on legacy products, or who had previously been benefitting from a lower price, will see their bills brought into line with current pricing. Sky says this will see an average increase of less than £3 a month. For example, some customers with Sky Broadband Unlimited pay £7.50 per month, but their price will rise to £10.00 per month – a £2.50 a month – or 33% increase.

 

The cost of Sky Talk packages will remain the same, but certain calls for Sky Talk customers calling outside of their package and for non-Sky Talk customers are rising. Key changes are as follows:

  • Calls to UK landlines will rise from 11.5p per minute to 12.54p per minute – a 9% increase.  
  • Calls to UK mobiles during the day will rise from 11.5p per minute to 19.35p per minute – a 68% increase
  • Calls to UK mobiles during the evening will rise from 11.5p per minute to 14.25p per minute – a 24% increase.

 

These prices will also come into force for new customers from 1 March.

In comparison, inflation stood at 1.6% in the year to December 2016 – according to the most recent figures available. Sky last upped line rental prices in December 2015.

I’m a Sky customer. Can I leave penalty free?

If you’re within your minimum contract term – which varies from 12 to 18 months depending on the deal you signed up to – Sky Broadband and Talk customers can leave penalty free as a result of these price hikes within 30 days of receiving notification of the price rises. Sky TV customers within their minimum contract ter, can't, however, cancel penalty free. 

If you’re outside of your minimum contract term and you’re a Sky TV customer, you can cancel at any time penalty free by giving 31 days’ notice.

If you’re outside of your minimum contract term and you’re a Sky Talk or Broadband customer, you can leave penalty free at any time by giving 10 days’ notice.

To cancel, you need to call Sky or speak to a ‘Live Chat’ advisor online.

Bear in mind that even if you have all three services and pay for them under one bill, each service provided may have separate contract terms.

Affected customers will be notified of any changes to their bills by letter or email between 25 January and 25 February.

Of course if you want to stay with Sky, haggle for a better deal saying you can’t afford the price increases – many customers have reported success in doing this.

Why is Sky raising prices?

Sky says the price rises reflect its ongoing investment in its onscreen TV line up, the cost of delivering a physical landline for calls and line rental to customers’ doors, investment in technology, and investment in its customer service. 

Are other providers increasing costs?

Yes, other telecoms providers have also recently introduced or announced price rises. Here’s a roundup: 

  • BT: Ten million Customers will be hit with broadband, line rental, home phone, BT Sport and certain call cost price hikes from 2 April 2017.
  • TalkTalk: Up to four million customers were hit with line rental, broadband, TV, home phone, and call cost increases from 4 November 2016. The provider has however, since launch a range of fixed price broadband products.
  • Virgin Media: Millions were hit with broadband, line rental, and certain bundle price hikes from 1 November 2016.
