Three quarters (75%) of Moneywise.co.uk users say shops and supermarkets should close on Christmas Day, our latest poll, which received over 1,200 votes, reveals.

We asked for our readers’ views after a petition calling for shops and supermarkets to close on the bank holiday, which falls the day after Christmas Day, received over 200,000 signatures.

The majority of those who voted in Moneywise’s latest poll agreed, saying all shops should close so retail staff can enjoy a festive break.

This 75% figure is broken down into 67% of Moneywise users who don’t work in retail, and 8% who do.

Others who don’t work in retail were a little more cautions however, with 8% saying they think shops of a certain size or type, for example food shops, should remain open. A further 8% meanwhile, said shops should stay open on Boxing Day as they need to buy goods.

Unsurprisingly, very few who work in retail want shop doors to remain open on Boxing Day. Just 1% said only shops of a certain size or type should remain open, while 0.5% said they want all shops to remain open as they need the cash.
