American Express card members will be rewarded for spending with smaller local retailers this Christmas.
What’s the deal?
People with American Express cards can get a £5 credit on their next statement when they spend £10 shopping from local retailers. The scheme kicks off on Small Business Saturday, 3 December and runs until 18 December. There is no limit to the amount of times the offer can be redeemed. However, it can only be used once in each participating shop.
Why should I care?
With more of us finding it cheaper, easier and more convenient to buy so many of our Christmas presents online, local high streets are suffering. Last Christmas shopper numbers were down 9% on 2014, according to retail analyst Springboard, and it’s a trend that’s unlikely to bounce back this year.
However much we love online shopping, most of us still love a good mooch up and down the high street and relish exploring independent shops – yet unless we support these businesses they will quickly disappear.
That’s why we reckon this Amex deal is a great incentive to encourage us to wrap up warm and hit the actual, not the virtual high street this weekend. And, if you do get cold there are numerous restaurants, cafes and bars participating in the scheme, where you can enjoy some warm food and drink.
What’s the catch?
Before any Amex card holders rush to the shops it’s important to know that you first need to register your card on the Amex Shop Small website. Also bear in mind that you can only take advantage of the offer in participating retailers.
I thought this might be quite a sizeable catch. As a card holder myself I know that a lot of businesses don’t accept American Express. However, when I entered my postcode into the Shop Small website I was pleasantly surprised to see that a lot of local businesses were participating including clothes and toy shops, restaurants and bars, even florists, opticians and hairdressers.
What are my other options?
Black Friday may have passed but if my email inbox is anything to go by there are still plenty of offers to get us spending with online retailers. However, you won’t know what’s on offer on your local high street unless you get off the sofa and go and take a look.
