Sainsbury’s shoppers can double the value of their Nectar points if they cash them in now, as the supermarket launches its annual double redemption scheme.
What’s the deal?
Each year, Sainsbury’s runs a week-long window where customers can swap their Nectar points for vouchers at a rate of 100 points for a pound, which is double their normal worth.
While points can only be redeemed for vouchers to spend in larger Sainsbury’s stores, you can earn points shopping at Nectar partners including Argos, Sky, Virgin Trains, Apple, and Just Eat.
Any points you swap for vouchers must be spent between 16 and 22 November, but if you want to get a head start, you can go and get your vouchers now from any customer service desk in the larger Sainsbury’s stores.
Smaller stores, such as Local stores, aren’t running this offer.
Why should I care?
It’s getting harder to earn cashback and rewards on spending these days, so any way to boost returns is welcome. Credit card based reward schemes aren’t what they used to be since the regulator introduced rules that limit how much credit card companies can charge retailers, reducing the amount available to be passed back to savvy plastic shoppers.
A loyalty scheme isn’t a reason to commit to a retailer as enhanced rewards are usually covered by higher prices, but if your preferred supermarket does have a free loyalty scheme, then you should take advantage of it.
What’s the catch?
There’s only a week-long window to cash in your rewards, and you’ll need to pick which department you’ll spend your vouchers on in advance.
You can cash in up to 4,000 points per department, which will boost your spending power from £20 to £40. You’re only allowed one voucher per department, so in theory the maximum boost could take £70 worth of points to £140. Vouchers do, however, need to be spent in one transaction.
The department choices are as follows:
- Tu Clothing
- Taste the Difference: Wine, Champagne, Sparkling, Sherry & Port
Be aware that if you covert points and then don’t use the vouchers, you’ll lost all of the points.
What are my other options?
If you shop at Asda you might be able to get returns of up to 4.2% overnight if you take advantage of its Christmas savings scheme. You’ll need to move fast though, as the deadline for earning the bonus is this Sunday (13 November).
You can also boost the value of your loyalty points with some credit cards – Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Asda all have credit card deals that effectively double your reward on in-store spending.
