Travel is Moneywise users' top retirement dream

11 October 2016

The biggest retirement dream for the majority of users is to go travelling, according to our latest poll results.

Nearly three in ten (27%) said their goal is to go on the holiday of a lifetime when they retire, while 15% say their top priority is a grown-up gap year.

But it’s not all fun and games, 15% say their main aspiration for retirement is to continue working in some shape of form, an additional 4% want to undertake charity work, while 7% want to learn a new skill, such as a language.

Of the 659 people who voted, just 7% listed their biggest retirement dream as spending more time with the grandkids.

Half of parents rely on grandparents to look after their children, but a separate poll we carried out earlier this month revealed that 33% of grandparents think there’s a downside to this - whether it be the cost of looking after grandkids, long journeys to see family, or uncontrollable children.

However, a considerably high 25% ticked the ‘Other’ box when we asked what their biggest retirement dream was. We’d love to hear about the ‘Other’ dreams that one in four of you have for retirement. So please email our editor, Moira O’Neill on:, or post your comments below.
