An investigation has been launched into gas and electricity provider ‘E’ amid concerns over its approach to recruiting new customers.
Energy regulator Ofgem says it will examine whether E has breached its rules, which state that sales and marketing information must be complete, accurate, and easy for people to understand.
However, Ofgem says the fact it has opened an investigation does not imply any wrong-doing at this stage.
E is a medium-sized supplier that provides electricity and gas predominately to customers on pre-payment meters, which is where you pay for your energy in advance. Prepayment meters are typically used by more vulnerable customers.
This is the latest in a number of investigations launched by Ofgem over the past few months:
- Earlier this month it announced that Economy Energy's sales practices are to be investigated.
- In July it announced it is investigating Extra Energy's customer service and billing process.
- In July it also announced that SSE's switching process is to be investigated.
