Sainsbury's slashes petrol prices for shoppers

24 July 2013

Drivers have been given a boost for the summer holidays with Sainsbury's offering its supermarket customers 10p off a litre of fuel if they spend more than £60 in store.

From 25 July, the supermarket's customers will receive a voucher at the till giving them 10p a litre off fuel at all Sainsburys' forecourts.

However, the promotion will only run until Wednesday 31 July, with the vouchers valid for two weeks after the purchase.

Customers who buy their groceries online will also be able to take part in the promotion as long as the delivery is made on or before 31 July - they will receive a voucher when their shopping arrives.

Richard Crampton, head of fuel at Sainsbury's, said: "With recent research suggesting families are thinking twice about going away in the car, we hope our 10 pence off each litre of fuel promotion will help them go further for less this summer."

However, it's important to remember Sainsbury's may not be the cheapest fuel – even with the voucher – so it's important to check the prices in your area. This can be done through websites such as

On Monday 22 July, for example, drivers in Harrogate would have been better off filling up their tanks at Esso's Leeds Harrogate petrol station at a cost of 131.9p per litre (ppl) of unleaded, according to the website. also puts the average price of petrol in the UK at 136.83ppl, with average price of diesel at 141.15ppl.

And there are other good supermarket deals to take advantage of this week.

Double your Tesco Clubcard points

From Monday 30 July, Tesco customers – both online and in-store – will be able to exchange £5 worth of Clubcard vouchers for £10 to spend on clothing and across its cook, dine and home departments.

The promotion runs until the end of the year as part of its launch of Clubcard Boost, which will merge Tesco's current Exchange and Rewards clubcard services.

'Exchange' was a seasonal event allowing customers to double their vouchers in selected departments, while 'Rewards' allowed customers to swap their vouchers at selected partner stores and get up to four times their value on other vouchers for things such as restaurant meals and day trips.
