NEWS ALERT: HSBC system crashes for two hours

4 November 2011

HSBC reported a nationwide system crash today with millions of customers unable to use its online accounts due to an IT fault.

Problems first started earlier this afternoon and some customers also had problems withdrawing cash from ATMs.

Customers with First Direct accounts also reported problems logging onto their accounts.

The bank says the fault occurred at 2.45pm and was swiftly sorted out by 4.50pm, when both online and ATM machines were back in action.

HSBC earlier apologised through its Twitter feed for the problems, and said: “Card terminals and internet banking should now be back on. Sorry, and thanks again for bearing with us.”

Worried customers took to social media sites to report problems and Twitter and Facebook have been flooded with messages.
