Interest rate held at 0.5%

The Bank of England has held interest rate at 0.5% for March as fears of a double-dip recession diminish.

As well as keeping the base rate at just half a percentage point, the central bank has put its quantitative easing programme, which finished last month, on ice.

However, the door remains open for further action if the economic recovery hits shaky ground.
