Cut the cost of days out

18 May 2009

Make the most of Bank Holidays, weekends and other time off work with our five day-tripper tips to making your money go further.

1. The great outdoors

It costs nothing to go on a bike ride, a long walk in the country or a swim in the sea. Good weather helps, and not going too far afield will save on parking or squeezing onto a packed train.

The national cycling network has a large range of routes and maps at, and lists walking itineraries.

2. Join the National Trust

If you join the National Trust you get free parking at all its locations, and entry to 300 historic houses and gardens.

See or call 0844 800 1895.

3. The great indoors

There are plenty of free museums across the UK to suit all tastes and age ranges. The National Football museum in Preston or The Big Pit Museum in Torfaen are just a couple of examples of what’s out there.

Go to;;; and for more inspiration.

4. Discounts

The discount voucher website,, has offers on some of the UK’s favourite attractions. Visit Britain also has offers on its website.

5. Make your own lunch

The usual rules apply: buy fruit, crisps and other snacks in bulk rather than individually; take your own water; and make your own sandwiches or salad.
