@Amar: first direct customers are able to do some of their banking at HSBC branches which isn't entirely convenient and might be the reason they rank lower in this category - it also makes sense of the fact that branch scores for HSBC and first direct are similar.

I don't see the problem with charging penalties for unauthorised overdrafts, as long as the client is made aware that this will happen if they don't manage their money. I don't agree Max A that going overdrawn is a fact of life - sure things get tight at times but one should not live beyond...
I am with Natwest and also have a calculator-thingy. I only need it to transact so no need to haul it around town along with ole mobile and all the rest. Really simple on-line tools, so happy to stay if they don't upset me.
