Record petrol price increase in June

The price of petrol has increased at a record level during June, making the UK the 10th most expensive country for unleaded petrol and the second highest for diesel.

According to the AA, unleaded prices have risen by 5.6p per litre to 118.2p in the past month while diesel prices have risen by 7.4p to 131.6p.

New measures unveiled by the government to help vulnerable households pay their energy bills have been branded inadequate by a charity, which claims they do not go far enough to deal with the looming fuel poverty crisis.

Up to 100,000 households could receive assistance paying their energy bills after the UK’s six biggest energy companies pledged help reduce fuel poverty.

The initiative, unveiled by energy secretary John Hutton, will see an extra £225 million made available for “fuel poor” households struggling with the cost of warming their homes.

Disappointing Budget for pensioners

Despite Alistair Darling pledging his commitment to "tackling pensioner poverty" and promoting well-being in later life, there was little evidence of this in his first Budget.

The only new announcement in Darling’s speech was a one-off boost to the £200 winter fuel allowance, of £50 for the over 60s and £100 to the over-80s.
