Cash machines

Great news that cash machines highlight charges but could more be done on screen? Some machines advertise new accounts and contact details but, as part of rolling information, could they also show the date and time, news or weather reports?

Taxman's blunders article and tax codes

I read with interest the above article in the Oct edition of Moneywise as I had never understood the meaning of the letter following the tax code. On checking mine I see that I am a 'P' - aged 65-74 and get full personal allowance. Fine. but as a married man why am I not rated as a 'V' and receiving the full personal allowance AND the married couple's allowance?

Legality of a Vendor refusing a bank cheque

I recently had to pay a holiday company (Portland) my final balance. Their invoice states that they only accept debit cards (by phone), a building society cheque or a credit card (at extra cost); but not a Bank cheque, despite the fact we are not travelling for another 3 months. Is this legal?

Short-Selling

During the last few months I have seen the same explanation of short-selling about 50 times. However, this doesn't make sense to me.

According to the explanation, someone wishing to make a profit borrows some shares, sells them and then buys them back after the price has (hopefully) dropped and returns the borrowed shares, pocketing the price difference.
