I have been trying to advise Barclays Bank of a cruise holiday I will be taking in September - this involves eight destinations. Barclays tell me that they can only record a maximum of two destinations at any one time. Furthermore, to prevent my debit card being blocked for potential fraudulent use I will need to ring them daily from each port. I have tried to be a responsible customer and be pro-active in minimising the disruption my holiday will clearly cause Barclays but am struggling with their red tape. It is no wonder customers give up or do not bother to notify their banks of foreign travel.
Recently I knoticed a direct debit had been set up from our account It was only for £6.00 but as you know direct debits can be different amounts each month. We did not recognise this or give authority for the set up. So we informed the bank who said it was up to us to speak to the company involved and to cancel the direct debit. This we did i also had an new card sent to me as i was really afraid that anyone could set up these payments. The company was one that we had dealt with over four years ago and they only thing they would say was to apologise and say that an error had been made. We were promised our money would be back in our account within 28 days which has now lapsed and still no payment. I wonder who is responsible for monies lost in this way especially if a large amount had been taken out. I have written to Watchdog about this and hopefully the bank will rememburst my £6.00
Thank you .
Write to Barclays Chief Executive with the details and tell him to sort it out.
In other words treat it as a complaint.
I bet they'll accept it then.
I HAVE A CREDIT CARD WITH TESCOS BUT AS I'M DISABLED MY MUM HAS A SECOND CARD. SHE HAD JUST DELIVERED MY SHOPPING LAST TUESDAY WHEN TESCOS PHONED TO CHECK IF I HAD USED MY CREDIT CARD ONLINE. SOMEONE HAD MADE A PURCHASE ONLINE USING MY CARD AND HAD ALSO SIGNED UP TO GENE'S REUNITED. THEY SAID THESE WERE PROBABLY TESTS TO SEE IF THE CARD WAS USABLE. THEY PICKED UP ON THESE TWO PAYMENTS WITHIN MIN'S OF THEM BEING MADE ONLINE AND I ACTUALLY USE MY CARD MOSTLY ONLINE SO IT'S NOT AS THOUGH IT WAS THAT UNUSUAL. SO I WAS REALLY PLEASED AND SURPRISED THAT THEY HAD PICKED UP ON THE MISUSE SO SOON. I DID NOT GET CHARGED FOR THE TWO UNAUTHORIZED PAYMENTS. THIS ALL HAPPENED ON THE TUESDAY AND BY THE FRIDAY THEY HAD SENT ME A NEW PAIR OF CARDS BY COURIER. I CAN'T FAULT TESCOS FINANCE AT ALL, I WOULD RATHER GET A PHONE CALL TO CHECK THAT IT WAS ME WHO HAD MADE A PAYMENT THAN FIND SOMEONE HAD CLONED MY CARD AND BEEN ON A SPENDING SPREE AT MY COST. I HAVE NEVER HAD SUCH GOOD SERVICE WITH OTHER VISA CARDS BEFORE.
They most certainly do not. I made the misfortune, of banking with the Halifax, after being told by my previous bank, that they didn't want my custom (eventhough they were my employers bank, which is why I banked with them in the first place). Now they are loosing money left right and centre (They don't know how to manage a bank).
I've had other banks in the past, when I was studying in this country (before I relocated), and at least they DID stop your direct debits, when you stopped them, but The Halifax don't. All the greedy beggars whom you cancel your arrangements with need to do, is to RE-INSTATE the direct debit without your concent, AND VOILA, instant money, which is taken out of your account, and you have no say in the matter, but are lumbered with a £35 charge, for not having funds in your account, and it doesn't matter how often you cancel the direct debit either.
As far as I am aware, if the Originator of a Direct Debit takes funds from your bank account in error or indeed takes an incorrect amount your bank is legally obliged to reimburse you under the Direct Debit Guarantee scheme.
I had a problem with RBS being over- zealous. I was moving money to new Building Society Accounts to get better rates. They were happy with 10K sent to Leeds BS but stopped the same to Coventry BS. Unfortunately, I made the transactions away from home and missed the urgent call to contact them.
They stopped my online access and ability to draw cash.
They were unable to explain why Leeds was OK and why Coventry was not - said they could not divulge their security procedures.
Felt like Big Brother or the "nanny state"!!
I had similar experience with Tesco, and was grateful fo rtheir vigilance. Full marks from me!
