EDF pulls popular fixed gas and electricity deal

EDF is pulling its popular fixed-price gas and electricity tariff, after it was snapped up by eager consumers.

Now the EDF Energy Blue + Price Promise 2014 is being withdrawn, ScottishPower is the only provider with a fixed-rate energy plan without exit penalties.

Fixed-rate tariffs with no exit penalties mean consumers won’t be affected by increases in price this winter, but can leave if prices fall before the end of their contract.

"Consumers who want to fix their energy prices cannot afford to hang around – these deals are flying off the shelves and could be pulled at any time," says Tom Lyon, energy expert at uSwitch.com.

He says: "People have quickly grasped that paying a low price today, coupled with a price guarantee and no exit penalties, makes fixing your prices a real no-brainer."

Popular tariffs across the board are likely to be replaced by more expensive equivalents this winter. Scottish & Southern Energy became the first provider to put its prices up last week, when it announced a 9% price-rise for customers.
