A one off tax for the government to squander as it wishes is not the answer. Better the government puts a cap on the ammount the energy companies can raise prices by.
A one off tax for the government to squander as it wishes is not the answer. Better the government puts a cap on the ammount the energy companies can raise prices by.If the energy companies are hit by a windfall tax they will only seek to redress this by raising prices further.
I agree with Hon Ron - the Government should not go in for gimmicks like a Windfall Tax (most of which will be lost in administering the collection, and subsequent distribution of the money) and instead ensure that the Offices of the Regulators are well-resourced with sufficient insider knowledge to ensure that energy companies are not profiteering when commodity prices are rising, and pass on savings when they fall. The Government should also develop a proper Energy Strategy, so that the UK cannot be held to ransome by the likes of the Middle East or Russia.
The Government would use the money for other things. The energy companies would just add it onto our bills and we would end up with even higher bills!

It would be more beneficial for the government to remove VAT from all energy sources - including petrol and diesel.
Any cost to be recovered by reducing its payroll and the welfare dependency culture it has created.
Well said, Anditork ! Why haven't the people who voted in favour of a windfall tax given their reasons ? Or is the only one spite and an easy target ?
Had the government not sold off the utilities.., who would be profiting now?
More government goal post moving and meddling........No thanks.!
I think they've done quite enough!
Vat should not be levied on Utility Bills, which include gas, electricty, telephone, water. Any price rises should be linked to the cost of living, as is the case with pay rises. The government benefit from all these massive price hikes. Politicians Salaries and wages should be more realistic and held accountable for how they spend taxpayers money. Dee
