Earlier this month the Court of Appeal ruled that the secretary of state for work and pensions cannot recover overpayments of social security benefits through the courts in cases where the claimant is not at fault.

On 5 October 2009, the High Court granted a Group Litigation Order to UK homeowners who are suing Bank of Scotland and Barclays over ‘unfair’ shared appreciation mortgages (SAMs).

This is an important victory for homeowners who will now sue the banks as a group, rather than on an individual basis.

Banks have agreed to make it easier for customers to switch current accounts and to make it clearer what their charges are.
