Christmas toys 2014: where to get the top 12 for less

There are 72 toys on the list in all but but the list below will show you where to find the top 12 for less than the recommended retail price (RRP).

But don't forget, while the list below states the prices for buying the toys individually, there are lots of discounts to be had if you buy a few at a time. For example, as points out, Argos has a 3 for 2 toy promotion so if you were to buy My Friend Cayla, The Lego Movie and Zoomer Dino, you could save £99.99 compared to buying them individually elsewhere. 

Meanwhile, new customers can save £5 on orders of more than £30 and Smyths is running a promotion what gives online customers £6 off on orders of £25 and above. 

1. Bop It! Beats, by Hasbro, RRP £21.99

Available for £16.49 at Toys R Us and Smyths Toys. If buying online, postage and packaging (P&P) is cheaper at Smyths (£2.99, compared to £4.95) but the cheapest price we could see was £16.80 with free shipping at However, this is not a well-known retailer and there's limited information about the company on its website and contact is by web form only.

2. Disney Frozen Snow Glow Elsa, Jakks Pacific, RRP £34.99

While we couldn't find Elsa any cheaper than the RRP, for those shopping online Toys R Us is offering free P&P of the princess. Delivery's free for all orders of £29.99 and above. Smyths, Argos (delivery) and were all out of stock on Wednesday 5 November.

3. Disney Frozen Sparkle Doll (assorted), Mattel, RRP £16.99

Again, sparkling Elsa isn't discounted anywhere Moneywise could see. For customers who can't make the most of free ‘click and collect' services,'s £2.95 delivery charge makes Elsa cheaper than at Argos, which charges an extra £3.95. Meanwhile, if you'll be buying several Disney toys this year, spend £50 and delivery's free.

4. Kidizoom Smart Watch, Vtech, RRP £39.99

This snazzy timepiece is widely available at £29.99 from the likes of Boots, Argos and Smyths Toys. Delivery's £2.95 at Boots for orders of less than £45, £3.95 and Argos but the item's not expected to be back in stock at Smyths for delivery at an extra £2.99 until 14 November.

5. Little Live Pets Bird Cage, Character, RRP £19.99

The cheapest we could find this was £17.99 with free delivery at It's a UK-based company that trades on eBay and Amazon, according to its website. However, it only offers the email address as a contact point. That said, it is on Facebook and Twitter, which may be of reassurance to some customers.

6. Minecraft Figures (assorted), Character, RRP £7.99

This playset wasn't on special offer at the time of writing but was widely available at the RRP from retailers including John Lewis (delivery £3 or free for orders from £50) and Argos (£3.95).

7. My Friend Cayla, Vivid, RRP £58.99

Little Cayla can be easily be found cheaper online. At and Tesco Direct she's £49 (plus £2.95 for delivery at Asda or £3 at Tesco).

8. Nerf Demolisher 2-in-1, Hasbro, RRP £44.99

Happily this is widely available for much less online. It's just £26.99 at Smyths (£2.99 delivery), £27 at (£2.95 delivery) and £33.74 at Argos (3.95 delivery).

9. The Lego Movie – Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!, LEGO, RRP £79.99

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without Lego and one of the biggest movies of the year will have thousands of children desperate to get their hands Benny's Spaceship on the big day. We found it available at for £53.99 – a huge saving of £26, with free UK delivery.

10. Toot-Toot Animals Safari Park, VTech, £39.99

Your children will be able to learn all about the wild with the Toot-Toot Safari Park. The interactive zoo features animal sound effects, phrases, songs and melodies. It's available at Toysrus for £29.99 and is eligible for its current free delivery deal on shopping baskets of £29.99 or more (Toysrus will also give you a £15 gift voucher if you spend £100 or more). We also found it at for £29.99, though you will pay £3.95 for delivery if you order online.

11. Transformers Stomp & Chomp Grimlock, Hasbro, £89.99

Argos have Grimlock on sale for 25% off at £66.99 with delivery at £3.95, making it the best price we could find.

12. Zoomer Dino-Boomer, Spin, RRP £99.99

This pricey little monster can happily be found much cheaper online. Smyths Toys has him for £59.99 (£2.99 delivery) but he's a few pennies cheaper at at £60 with delivery at £2.95.

Meccano - £19.99 (RRP)

The Multimodels 10 Set includes more than 260 parts that will help children build 10 different models. It is a winner in the 2014 Slow Toy Awards, run by the Slow Toy Movement, founded by Thierry Bourret in 2011. It showcases toys designed to inspire children's minds and encourage real play.

Lego City Mobile Police Unit - £29.99

You can pick almost any Lego set and children will be happy. This year, we've gone for the City Mobile Police Unit as something of an antidote to the ubiquitous Lego movie tie-ins that include Lord of the Rings and Star Wars playsets.

Leap TV, LeapFrog - £119.99

LeapFrog has a history of producing modern toys powered by technology that offer educational elements as well as fun. It calls Leap TV an educational video gaming system that combines “activity and movement with the best-in-class educational curriculum”.

Multiplication Master - £16.99

With this small electronic game, children must answer as many multiplication questions as possible within a minute, and then they can check their score.
