10 tips to becoming a successful haggler
Here are the 10 top tips on how to get the most out of your favourite high street shop, according to monesavingexpert.com.
1. Avoid peak time shopping
Try shopping out of peak times, so that sales assistants are not in a rush.
2. Choose you target
Make sure you approach the right person, someone too senior will have no time to help, but someone too junior is likely to have no discretion. Try to find a supervisor.
3. Discounted items
If the product has already been discounted, or is on sale, you are more likely to get a result if you ask for a further discount, the same is true even after the sale has ended.
4. Do them a favour
If their stocks are running low, and it's the last one on the shelf, offer to 'help them clear their shelves for restocking', shops will want to sell the last few remaining items in stock quickly.
5. Buy out of season
You are likely to get the best discounts on products out of season, for example buying winter coats in summer and barbecues in winter.
6. It's always worth asking
If they can't offer you any discounts, they might offer you something extra instead, it's always worth asking.
7. Hidden flaws
Look for hidden flaws, the less likely they are to be able to sell it someone else, the bigger the discount you will be able to obtain. The same is true of display goods, you are more likely to get a good deal on these, as shops find them harder to sell.
8. Knowledge is power
Make sure you know what price other stores are selling the same product for, in this case knowledge really is power. You want to try to create some competition.
9. Get the staff on side
Make sure you smile and but remember to be firm. You are more likely to get what you want if you get staff on side.
10. Buy in bundles
As with most things you are more likely to get a discount if you are buying more than one thing. Tell them you can only buy both if they give you a discount.
