?Volatility (or standard deviation), when applied to an investment fund, expresses its risk. It shows how widely a range of returns varied from the fund's average return over a particular period. For example, if a fund had an average return of 5%, and its volatility was 15, this would mean that the range of its returns over the period had swung between +20% and -10%.

Tracking error
?This measures the standard deviation of a fund's excess returns over the returns of an index or benchmark portfolio. As such, it can be an indication of 'riskiness' in the manager's investment style. A Tracking Error below 2 suggests a passive approach. At 3 and above the the manager will be deploying a more active investment style.

Information ratio
?This is a useful risk-adjusted measure of actively managed fund performance. It is calculated by deducting the returns of the fund's benchmark from the fund's overall returns, then dividing the result by its tracking error. The higher the Information Ratio the better. It is generally considered that a figure of 0.5 reflects a good performance, 0.75 very good, and 1.00 outstanding.

?An indication of how closely correlated a fund is to an index or a benchmark. Values for R-Squared range between 0 and 1, with 0 indicating no correlation at all and 1 showing a perfect match. Values upwards of 0.7 suggest that the fund's behaviour is increasingly linked to its benchmark.

Patrick Edwardson08/12/2015Patrick graduated BSc in Banking and International Finance from Cass Business School in 1993. He joined Baillie Gifford the same year and after his initial training he joined the Fixed Income Team where he spent five years as an Investment Manager. In 2000, Patrick moved to the UK Equity Team and took on the management of UK equity assets for balanced clients and various UK income portfolios. In 2007 he began initial development of our Diversified Growth product and is Head of the Multi Asset Team. Patrick became a Partner in 2005.
James Squires08/12/2015James graduated BA in Mathematics and Philosophy from Oxford University in 2005. He joined Baillie Gifford in 2006, initially working in our North American Equity and Fixed Income Teams. He is now an Investment Manager in the Multi Asset Team. James is a member of the Investment Risk Committee and has been a CFA Charterholder since 2010.
Scott Lothian28/12/2015Scott graduated BSc in Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics from Heriot-Watt University in 1999; he is also a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries. Prior to joining Baillie Gifford in 2015 he worked for Schroders in London, BEA Union in Hong Kong and Towers Watson. Scott is an Investment Manager in the Multi Asset Team.
David McIntyre08/12/2015David graduated BA in History and Politics from Oxford University in 2004. He previously worked for KPMG and in 2007 qualified as a Chartered Accountant. David joined Baillie Gifford in 2008 and worked in the Fixed Income and European Equity Teams. He is now an Investment Manager in the Multi Asset Team.
Felix Amoako28/12/2015Felix graduated Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from University of Cape Coast, Ghana in 2008 and MSc in Investment Analysis from Stirling University in 2010. Felix joined Baillie Gifford in 2011 and is an Investment Manger in the Multi Asset Team.
