Tips for the would be self employed

Tue, 01/01/2008 - 18:15

I am a professional and could fairly easily sell my services to multiple companies and public organisations on a half day a month to one or two day a week basis.

What tips would those who have trodden this path have for someone new to the game?

Hi KRHSmith, I have just joined Moneywise forums and your question is a good one. I run a small motivation based business called Motivational Maps Ltd, and we have created an online heuristic device that describes, measures, monitors and maximizes motivation through its application-rich toolkit. The Maps themselves are done individually, but from the individual results, team and organizational maps can be created. MM Ltd as a company solves 3 basic problems for organizations: *employee motivation problems. *staff retention issues. *staff performance challenges. How are the maps different? I don't know if you use pyschological profiling tools like Myers Briggs and NLP? Well, the maps are fundamentally different from a psychometric test and their usage complements such tests. In a nutshell, PT tell managers how to interact with their staff, MM tell managers what to interact with staff. Further, PT tend to be relatively fixed; MM change over time. What's the current position of MMaps Ltd? Currently, MM Ltd has 3 staff and over 70 licensees of its Motivational Maps® product across the UK. The licensees are predominantly management consultants and coaches. Most of our current licensees or Authorised Practitioners have found that the Maps make a superb USP when pitching for new work, and many business owners are greatly impressed with a tool that can provide a language, and therefore a metric for measuring motivation in business. The Authorised Practitioner licensee arrangement will probably shortly become a franchise opportunity as new tools and applications are being developed as we speak to complement the Motivational Map®. So what's the next step? If your interested in adding a new string to your bow KRHSmith, why not get in touch. Ok. Have a great evening my man, and hopefully hear from you soon. All the best, James

...or did you just respond to a request for advice and offer nothing but a plug for your own company?

Hi guys, it's great to see so many people already making use of the forums and offering advice - keep up the good work!

The forums are provided for Moneywise users to ask questions, start debate or generally get their personal finance related bugbears off their chest. They are not for self-promotion or to post adverts, and we would ask all users to respect this in order to keep these forums running in the way there are intended.

We are happy for people to tell us of great experiences they've had with specific companies but that's not a green light for companies to advertise or plug themselves here. Our advertising guys would be happy to hear from you!

Thanks and keep posting.

James,

It sounds like an interesting franchise but I've a lot of strings on my bow already and I'm more interested in hearing about benefits and pitfalls of gong self employed / consultancy working rather than looking for a different oportunity. At present I'm not a company and have nothing to advertise. I'm not in financial advice either - sorry to be mysterious but I don't want to give away too much of my identity online!

The post-patrol are onto your James and rightly so!  Mysterious mister KHRSmith does not have any staff to motivate yet, can’t you tell?  No tips here KHRSmith, I’m just a lowly salary earner, but I think you will have to open your cards slightly if you want any worthwhile advice.  Wish you all the best, though, and if you ever recruit a few remember to keep them motivated.  (Wonder if motivational maps would work for my company…lol?)
