I am 85 registered disabled and made a mistake and changed my accounts to Santander I wish I never had, It is the worst bank in the UK, I open a 2 year fixed bond and had difficulties in finding interest on my rewards account so I wrote and asked why, a simple question. It has taken over 30 letters, including, Recorded and special delivery letters at £5.00 or more for each of these,  after 16 months I finally got an explanation. I made a mistake on my self assessment I always get my revenue form completed early in case I forget to do it, so my self assesment is very wrong, I do not appear to have solved it yet no reply from HMR, Santander said they do not do tax assessment, never sent me a Certificate of Tax Paid as other Banks do, did not repay all I have spent on postage, phone calls, and time writing letters. Due to my fixed Bond I have to give thought to changing Banks.  It has caused me a lot of stress over  16 months to get a simple question answered.

I couldn't agree more they are a shocking bank. I had no option but to change from them because of their poor service. I sold my house to finance a granny annexe attached to my daughters house, where I now live. Whilst waiting for the planning permissions etc. to be approved and finalised I had close to £100,000 in one of their savings accounts. I was disgusted with the amount of interest it earned especially as I put it in the account that their own staff said was the best one. (For them - I guess!!). I got nowhere when I queried the interest.

The final straw was a few months after the building works were completed and I managed to go overdrawn by 39p (a big big sin apparently!!). I was away from home for a short time and came home to a series of letters and a statement that shocked me. That 39p had cost me a total of £600+ in rolled-up fees and interests. When I approached them I got absolutely nowhere so I decided to leave the bank. That created another scenario with changing over to the new bank, because of Santander's delay in transferring my account I was forced into an overdraft situation with my new bank who were very sympathetic to the situation but nevertheless it cost me in fees and interest, which were not of my making.

That 39 pence was the only time I had ever been in an overdraft situation but that fact counted for nothing.

I would definitely not recommend Santander to anyone else. They stink!!

I had an account with Alliance and Leicester that obviously changed to Santander. On 9th November last year I noticed that £67.50 had gone out of my account for a cheque. I knew this wasn't my cheque so I rang them straight away. It took 5 phone calls (some lasting more than 30 mins whilst I was kept on hold) and until the end of January for them to sort out that indeed it wasn't a cheque written by me, but a 'posting' error by them, before the £67.50 was credited back into my account. I did get some compensation (£50) but only because I asked for it and I had to go to the Financial Ombudsman to get it back. Not a good bank at all!!!!!

I had a joint account with my partner when we split up he cancelled my card to the account even though I had been into branch and told them he was likely to do this. He then cleaned out the account leaving me with nothing.

Several letters later they say they have done nothing wrong and it is not their fault the case is now with the financial ombudsman as all the letters that I write to them are ignored not good for a very large bank.

I would not recomment them to anyone and will never have any dealing with them again.
