Should the government bow to fuel tax pressure?

Tue, 27/05/2008 - 11:20

MPs, drivers and business leaders are urging the government to drop the 2p increase in fuel duty - due to come into effect from October - amid record crude oil prices and the rising cost of petrol.

But coming so soon after partial step-down over the 10p income tax band, there is a real risk that any modifications to fuel duty plans could seriously undermine the Treasury's policy on taxation and Gordon Brown's competence as leader of the Labour party.

Should the government lose face and bow to pressure? Is the potential impact of higher fuel duty big enough a threat to warrant a change so late in the day?

Yes the government should drop the 2p increase in fuel duty because of the overall effect it will have on delivery of various food products. We are already seeing high food prices and any further increases in fuel duty will make matters far worse. I also feel the government should go a step further and reduce the present duty on fuel by say 5% to help the public and industry generally during this difficult period and so help to keep inflation down as much as possible.
