Royal Mail redirection - free or fee?

I travel around in my work a good deal, and have always had my post sent to my sister's address. When a letter arrived for me, she would merely cross out her address and hand write my present address and pop it back in a postbox. The mail has always found its way to me, wherever I might be in UK.

I understand now, that RM are not obliged to do this - they offer instead a redirection service for £38.99 a year. But recently, my mail is still getting through as before. I wonder if any RM sorting office staff member who reads this might let me know the official line? Will a hand readdressed  letter be 'binned' or will it get an 'excess postage' sticker, or will it continue, as in the past, to be delivered. I get only occasional letters, and can't see myself forking out £38.99 for the official service!

I think that Royal Mail should redirect post for free, it can't be that much cost to them and lots of letters a year are incorrectly sent to or posted the wrong address through no fault of the recipient. Royal Mail themselves must also make errors and post letters to the wrong person. It would be up to us to pay to have it redirected ? This doesn't make sense.  I think anyone who is moving home or business or has two addresses should inform Royal Mail, if they know that they might have a lot of redirected mail, I think this is appropriate to charge a fee. Its also appropriate if re-direction is part of their business.

It actually costs Royal Mail a lot to redirect mail and I have no idea why reader1 thinks they should do it for free. This is no different than saying you should be allowed to take things from shops without paying.
If we wish to loose a postal service that delivers to every house every day, carry on, you won't realise what you have lost until its gone.
