Energy prices: Where do you stand?

Find out how your energy supplier has changed gas and electricity prices since 2008.

British Gas

Centica-owned British Gas is the UK’s largest energy supplier, boasting around 48% of the market. It has an estimated 15.7 million customers.

January 2008: British Gas increased gas and electricity bills by 15%.

July 2008: British Gas increased dual fuel bills by 25%, electricity bills by 9% and gas bills by 35%.

February 2009: British Gas reduced its standard tariff gas price by 10%.

May 2009: British Gas reduced its electricity prices by 10%.

February 2010: British Gas reduced gas bills by 7%.

Scottish and Southern Energy

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) is the second biggest energy company in the UK, with nearly 10 million customers.

April 2008:
SSE increased electricity bills by an average of 14.2%, while prices for gas increased by 15.8%.

August 2008: SSE hiked electricity customers' bills by around 19.2% and gas customers' bills by 29.2%.

March 2009: SSE reduced gas bills by 4% and electricity bills by 9%.

March 2010: SSE cut gas bills by 4%.

npower

npower has around 6.9 million customers in the UK.

January 2008: npower increased electricity bills by 12.7% and gas bills by 17.2%.

August 2008: npower revealed a 14% increase in electricity bills and a 26% increase for gas bills.

March 2009: npower electricity customers saw their bills fall by 8%. Gas customers saw no change to their bills.

March 2010: npower cut gas bills by 7%.

E.ON

E.ON, the German-owned company formerly known as powergen, has around 5.5 million customers in the UK.

February 2008: E.ON increased electricity bills by 9.7% and gas bills by 15%.

August 2008: E.ON increased electricty bills by 16%, gas bills by 26% and dual fuel bills by 22%.

March 2009: E.ON cut electricity bills by 9%. Gas customers' bills remained unchanged.

July 2009: E.ON cut gas bills by 3.3%.

EDF Energy

EDF Energy has over five million customers.

February 2008: EDF puts up electricity prices by 7.9% and gas prices by 12.9%.

July 2008: EDF puts up electricity prices by 17% and gas prices by 22%.

March 2009: EDF reduced electricity bills by 8.8%. Gas customers saw no change to their bills.

March 2010: EDF reduced gas bills by 4%.

ScottishPower

ScottishPower has over five million customers.

February 2008: ScottishPower put up dual fuel prices by 14.8%, while electricity prices rose by 14% and gas prices by 15%.

August 2008: ScottishPower increased dual fuel prices by 25%, electricity prices by 9% and gas prices by 34%.

March 2009: ScottishPower reduced electricity bills by 3% and gas bills by 7.5%.

March 2010: ScottishPower reduced gas bills by 8%.
